There is a lot that has changed over the last 12 months for the Backyard Wiffle® Ball League, not only when it comes to the BWBL Regional, but across the board. We have a new Council, new speed limit, and a new team, to name a few. With all of these changes, it was only natural to have some changes for Regionals, starting with a new name that reflects the history of the Wilkes-Barre area -- the Breaker Boys.
Despite all the changes, there are two familiar faces coming back to Regional play with Steve Dotzel and Brandon Haydt coming back. Daulton Shearer is also familiar, but having only played in Ohio last season, this will be his first crack at a making a name for himself on the national stage while playing on his home turf. Kevin Sickle is back for more – something that won’t change any time soon. He may even make an appearance on the field at one point or another this weekend.
Andy Peck is a name that anyone associated with the BWBL is quite familiar, as he has been a part of the league for 11 seasons. Peck is the captain of the longest-running franchise in league history – Saturday Crush. He is a four-time BWBL champion and perhaps the best leadoff hitter the league has ever seen. After passing on a chance at Regionals last year, Peck is ready to prove his worth as a nationally-recognizable player.
Drew Slater is an up-and-coming player in the BWBL, entering his third season – all with Shooting Stars. Slater brings a power bat, a solid arm, and range in the field to a squad that needs all three to be successful.
Doug Novitski was a late addition to the team, but not due to a lack of talent. The BWBL would have had Novitski on the roster from the get-go, but other possibilities hung around with other leagues before he decided to play with the league that gave him his start in competitive Wiffle® ball. Novitski hits for power, average, can run, throw, and field, so he is perhaps the squad’s best example of a five-tool player.
With all of the drama that has emerged from the Wilkes-Barre area in 2016, this squad is ready to turn a few heads. Podcasts, group chats, and ba
