Bryce Harper. Waterworld. Jurassic Park. Todd Van Poppel.
What does any of this have to do with the Backyard Wiffle® Ball League (BWBL)? All had promise as newcomers. Some boomed. Some busted.
Which one will the BWBL most resemble as they debut Saturday in their first live National Wiffle® League Association (NWLA) event - an event they get the opportunity to host? In just a few short days, we will find out.
The BWBL has been at the forefront of Wiffle® in Pennsylvania for over a decade now and is finally ready to make some noise on a national level. After squabbles on the Interwebs with Freaky Franchise in 2012, the 2015 BWBL team dubbed S.uper H.eroes I.n T.raining has put together a squad ready to make a run in what many are calling the “most challenging region” in the NWLA tournament this year.
The S.H.I.T roster consists of: Steve Dotzel, Joey Dougher, Tom Hannon, Brandon Haydt, Mikey Holloway, Jake Lukachik, Matt Morgan, and Mike White. All have, at one time or another, been a top-two starter for their respective BWBL teams and all have offensive abilities to help land them on the S.H.I.T. roster. The team will be managed by BWBL Commissioner Kevin Sickle.
Will it be a boom or a bust? For this team, it’s time to prove themselves. Bryce Harper came in with lots of hype and has lived up to that billing. Todd Van Poppel – not so much (bonus points to whomever can name the team that drafted him and at least four of the six teams with which he played -- without reverting back to the link).
Playing at home will be a big benefit to S.H.I.T., but lack of experience together on the national stage will be a question mark. There are those on the BWBL bandwagon and those who have their doubts. Now is time to prove it on the field, with the first pitch at Diamond City Park against the Freaky Franchise this Saturday at 8:30 a.m.
